Welcome to The Lamp Post!
A ministry of Joy of All Who Sorrow Orthodox Church.
The Lamp Post is a gathering place inspired by The Eagle and Child pub in Oxford, England. It was here that the “Inklings” writers' group, that included C.S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, met on a regular basis.
The Lamp Post is named from an image in C.S. Lewis’ Narnia books: a solitary lamp post giving light in the middle of a cold and dark evergreen forest. This image challenges us even as it draws us to it as we need and want light in the darkness. Did you know there is also a lion named Aslan in Narnia? We talk about him often.
Our vision is to create an authentic community pub space to bring people together and talk about the really important topics that make us human. Something essential happens when people gather regularly in conversation and spend time together, especially in this increasingly impersonal world. We need each other on this journey, to help us become who we are truly created to be.
C.S. Lewis and the “Inklings” writers have had a major impact on my journey, as with so many others, to the Christian faith. I spent countless hours in coffee shops and pubs with friends talking and sharing on this journey. It is my hope that together we can truly make this a community pub space for special events, where we can enjoy our time together over food and drink. We might come away better versions of ourselves. C.S. Lewis once said “my happiest hours are spent with three or four old friends in old clothes tramping together and putting up in small pubs.”
We currently have regular church programs here and open this to monthly gatherings to the wider community with a scheduled program and/or fellowship. We invite you to become a part of our community building, which is always done one relationship at a time.
Visit us at our Facebook page and the church calendar to learn the latest news and events, as we transform this beautiful space. Maybe, just maybe, it will allow us to be open to a transformation within ourselves.
